DreadOut is a horror survival video game released in 2014. It was developed by Digital Happiness and published by PT Digital Semantika Indonesia.
The Story
DreadOut uses Indonesian ghost stories to create an atmosphere of horror and abandon. The main story starts with a group of senior high-school students on a road trip. They lose their way and find themselves in a ghost town.
You get to play as Linda, one of the high-school students, who start exploring this ghost town after she wakes up from an unknown state of being. She has to solve puzzles to figure out what is going on. Her only weapon against the powers of darkness is her smartphone that allows her to take pictures. It also works as a looking glass through which she can see the ghosts and other clues.
Graphics, Control, and Gameplay
DreadOut uses both first person and third person perspective for gameplay. The controls make it easy to navigate through the maze of the haunted corridors. However, the controls are not always accurate when it is time to fight your ghostly opponents.
Most of the gameplay takes place inside a run-down school. The graphics are not of the highest quality but they are designed with enough care to make the ghosts and corridors look chilling. The haunted atmosphere adds enough creepiness points to make it a heart-pounding game. The sound effects are eerie and add to the horror factor.
Overall, DreadOut delivers a fantastic survival horror story that will give goosebumps at certain points. The story ending is not conclusive which might be a lure for some players and a letdown for others. It currently has a Metacritic rating of 55/100.
